Wax:Off - Global Market hits festival
It is with sincere regret that organisers of Wax:On Live, due to be staged at Lotherton Hall in Leeds on May 31st have announced its cancellation. The festival fell victim not to poor ticket sales or lack of support and dedication, but to the credit crunch that has the UK in the grip of an economic strangehold. "On forming the company there were two streams of investment scheduled in order to ensure the event was viable in year one", event promoter Dan Blackledge explained. "As we are all aware festivals of this nature need nurture and we have this morning been informed that due to circumstances in the global financial market place and its knock on effect, the event has become unsustainable." Dan went on to say: "It was a great idea in an awful economic period." Wax:On have instructed all ticket agents to give full refunds to all ticket holders. The Wax:On club nights will continue to rock the cities of Leeds, Newcastle and Brighton, with some of the acts from the festival transferred over to these events.

Refectory first for The Cribs
Wakefield band The Cribs have followed in the footsteps of some of the world’s top acts by appearing on stage at The Refectory at the University of Leeds. Bands and performers such as The Clash, Elton John, Kaiser Chiefs, Rolling Stones, Paul Weller and of course The Who have all played at Leeds’ largest live music venue, each appearing on several sell-out occasions during their careers. In the history of the building’s use for concerts however, no act had successfully sold out two consecutive nights, two years in a row. That is, until the 8th and 9th February 2008 when The Cribs headlined the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour for two rammed to the rafters shows, repeating the success of their standalone shows 9th and 10th June 2007. To commemorate this first and the venue’s commitment to the local music scene, The Cribs were presented with an award from The University of Leeds by Modest Mouse guitarist and Smiths legend Johnny Marr, who commented “this is a venue which has hosted some legendary bands, but in 45 years no-one has played four sell-out shows within 10 months of each other. Well done lads.” The presentation by Marr was particularly poignant as he represents one of The Crib’s guitar heroes. Marr was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Q Magazine in 2007. Upon presentation, a genuinely touched Cribs vocalist Ryan Jarman spoke up for the band and admitted they had long harboured an ambition to play at The Refectory; “This is a lovely gesture. We came and saw The Strokes here ages ago and we always wanted to play here after that. Its great to be part of the history of such an important venue.” Also appearing on the NME Shockwaves bill were The Ting Tings, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, and Does It Offend You Yeah? Both Leeds dates on this year’s tour sold out at 2100 tickets.

Refec Gig History
It occured to us recently here at Leedstickets Towers that over the years, there has been some pretty cool stuff going down at The Refectory. From the late 1960s onwards The Refec has seen the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Basement Jaxx, The Killers, The Smiths, The Clash, Kasabian, and of course not forgetting The Who. We've decided to commit this history to the web for all to see, you can take a look here: http://www.alumni.leeds.ac.uk/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?&pid=183&srcid=-2 and keep checking back as we delve through the archives and old diaries to unearth such seminal concerts as the first outing for Paul McCartney and Wings, or the hormone-fest which was the Kajagoogoo concert. There will soon be the option on this page to post your fond memories of gigs at The Refec, please feel free to share!

Refectory Relaunch - one month and counting...
As you may have noticed, The Refectory has been rather quiet of late. Since December 2006 it has been closed for a major re-fit to improve its function both as a live music venue in the evenings and as the main cafeteria on campus for Leeds University students and staff during the day. Now the building work is entering into the home stretch and by early March we will resume normal (if somewhat upgraded) service with Australian band Jet the first to grace the stage on March 6th. Other confirmed acts to follow include Deftones (9 Mar), James Morrison (12 Mar), Corinne Bailey Rae (16 Mar), Barenaked Ladies (29 Mar), The View (14 Apr), Maximo Park (24 Apr), and The Sunshine Underground (12 May). You’ll have plenty of opportunities here to sample the delights of the new décor and light shows, plus the vastly improved air conditioning system and bar area. With yet more gigs still to confirm over the coming months we think you’ll find plenty of reasons to get re-acquainted with The Refectory.

Our First Birthday bash is gonna be another top class affair, and this time we’ve got an extra-special cause so please show your support; this Monday we’re joined by the Leeds RAG Uganda project crew who are busting their chops, chaps and particularly fine asses to raise enough funds to get over to Uganda to build schools for kids!! From Leeds College of Music we’ve got a brand new band called Hard Drive, a five-piece contemporary jazz instrumental, expect to hear cutting edge jazz from Jazz Degree students, this gig is bound to impress.

Jo Wiley's new music tour on Wednesday night in Stylus is now being headlined by Milburn. Tickets are £6 from CATS, www.leedstickets.com, Jumbo records and Crash records.

About Milburn...
Joe Carnall (lead vocals/bass, 18), brother Louis Carnall (vocals, rhythm guitar, 19), Tom Rowley (lead guitar, 19) and Joe "Greeny" Green (drums, 20) have been playing together since they were 14, practising in Greeny's Nan's loft (she'd bring up the orange juice on a teatray) and Louis & Joe's Dad's office on the weekend ("Did the rest of the staff know? Not really"), until they emerged lean, loud and keen, with a formidable live reputation, an arsenal of undeniable songs and a fanbase as passionate about Milburn as Milburn are about good music. Little wonder first proper single "Send In The Boys"stormed the charts at 22.

Avenged Sevenfold
September 18, 2006 – Burbank, CA - Huntington Beach, CA quintet Avenged Sevenfold — M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ, and The Reverend — have announced cancellation of tour dates. The band will not be playing scheduled UK fall dates, and have postponed plans for a winter U.S. tour in favor of entering the recording studio.
Avenged Sevenfold hopes fans will not be let down, but rather will look forward to seeing them back on the road with new songs to share. The band have been writing songs for their forthcoming album, and are eager to work on a forthcoming album.
Singer M. Shadows explains the band’s decision, “We love our loyal fans and want to continue giving them the freshest, most awesome show and material possible. We’ve been playing songs from City of Evil around the world for 15 months and now feel it’s time to bring them something new. We’re honored by the growing audiences wanting to see our show, but feel an obligation to our fans to always give them the best we have to offer. We’ve started writing and can’t wait for our fans to hear what we’re working on”
Avenged Sevenfold has been named by Alternative Press “the new face of metal,” and Kerrang! calls the gold-certified City of Evil, “an unequivocal triumph….technically dazzling, fiendishly inventive, and wholly distinct from everything else you’ll hear this year.”
Avenged Sevenfold have spent the last year touring non-stop behind City of Evil, which also spawned the adrenalized hits “Bat Country” and “Beast and the Harlot.” They completed a spring U.S. arena tour and several European dates with personal heroes Guns N' Roses and Metallica. M. Shadows currently graces the cover of Revolver Magazine alongside James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of Metallica. The band most recently finished up a run as a mainstage headliner on Ozzfest.

Stylus
One of Leeds’ most diverse, exciting and respected venues is getting a brand new look and feel following a refurbishment over the summer of 2006.

Stylus, located in the University District of Leeds within the students union, has been hosting both live acts (acts as diverse as Public Enemy, The Kooks and Courtney Pine have played in the 1000 capacity venue) and club nights (such as Brighton Beach, The Wendy House and the award winning student night Fruity) since 2001.

Over the summer there have been a huge amount of work on the décor, bars, soundsystem and acoustics, stage layout and the way the venue links with its sister venues Mine and Pulse.

Stylus is not just open to students and attracts music lovers and clubbers from across Leeds and West Yorkshire.
