<title>Oliver Mtukudzi &amp; The Black Spirits - 23 Aug 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1160/Oliver-Mtukudzi-The-Black-Spirits</link>
<description>Called the Grand Master of Zimbabwean traditional pop, Oliver Mtukudzi is truly one of Southern Africa's greatest musicians. With a career spanning twenty-six years, 'Tuku' (nicknamed by his fans) has composed an impressive 46 original albums.

As an established producer, arranger, song writer, and performer, this prolific and socially conscious artist blends southern Africa’s rural Shona and urban Zulu beats into his own original afro-pop mix. Tuku’s innovative style and techniques have become widely known as ‘Tuku Music.’

Although distinct from other Zimbabwean styles, Tuku Music embraces the traditional drumming patterns of the Korekore clan and is reminiscent of the traditional forms of the mbira, the South African mbaganga style, and the popular Zimbabwean music style called jiti.

Together with his band The Black Spirits, Tuku has toured all over Africa and the world. Notable stops in the US include an appearance on the David Letterman Show, and a memorable performance at the New Orleans Jazzfest.

<title>Sergeant, Cut Off Your Hands and special guests - 29 Sep 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1164/Sergeant-Cut-Off-Your-Hands</link>
<description>Presenting an evening of some of the hottest breakthrough bands this year playing live in the intimate surrounds of Mine.

Indie four-piece Sergeant have been garnering praise from left right and centre. After signing with Mercury Records in 2007, the band played both T in the Park and Glastonbury festivals and have attracted a fanbase and media attention extending well outside their Scottish base. Xfm Scotland’s Jim Gellatly has marked the band as one of his favourites for 2007 and they have recently drawn further praise from former Creation Records boss Alan McGee. The NME have likened their latest release to &quot;…summer bursting out of a fruit and barley bottle, &quot;K Ok&quot; is the most perfect jingle-jangle pop anthem we can imagine being penned.&quot;

Also on the bill are Cut Off Your Hands, otherwise known as Nick Johnston (vocals), Michael Ramirez (guitar), Philip Hadfield (bass), and Brent Harris (drums). The Auckland based band include Gang of Four, The Cure, Death From Above 1979, Whirlwind Heat, Joy Division, Split Enz, and James Chance &amp; The Contortions among the chief influences on their skittering brand of proto-punk styled indie rock. Their self produced debut EP “Shaky Hands” was released in August 2006 on Speak N Spell, and includes the singles “You and I” and “Expectations.”

Keep your eyes peeled for details about a special guest to be added to the line up…. you won’t be disappointed!

<description>DragonForce are the metal sensations of recent years, making their mark right across the globe with a colossal run of shows to promote one of the genres most remarkable releases.

‘Inhuman Rampage’ left the press in a state of critical meltdown. “While most bands want to be bigger than Metallica, DragonForce have the capacity to exceed Star Wars,” gushed the UK’s Metal Hammer magazine. “How DragonForce will ever top this album remains to be seen,” agreed its gobsmacked sister title, Kerrang! had already got in on the act, declaring: “DragonForce are only getting bigger. Prepare for the onslaught.”

<title>Spiritualized - 10 Oct 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1138/Spiritualized</link>
<description>Following a major breakdown in relations between Spacemen 3 co-frontmen Peter Kember and Jason Pierce, the group's bassist Will Carruthers, drummer Jonny Mattock and guitarist Mark Refoy decided to form a splinter group, before persuading Pierce to join alongside local friend Steve Evans to create Spiritualized. The band took their name from an adaptation of the text on the back label of a bottle of Pernod. Due to formation from a majority of Spacemen 3 members, a technical clause meant that Spiritualized had to maintain the Spacemen 3 recording contract with Dedicated Records.

The first Spiritualized release, in 1990, was a cover of The Troggs' Anyway That You Want Me; the record heralded the official split of Spacemen 3 following contractual wrangles over the band's name and its use in Spiritualized-related promotional material

Evans was replaced on keyboards by Pierce's then-girlfriend Kate Radley for the follow-up single, Run/I Want You. A number of singles followed, before the band, in early 1992, released their first LP Lazer Guided Melodies, which had been recorded in Rugby over the previous two years. A second album, Pure Phase, was released in 1995, and a third Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space emerged in 1997 to notable critical acclaim and commercial success.

The musical style of Spiritualized relies heavily on sustained 'pedal' notes and drones. Lazer Guided Melodies and Pure Phase incorporate elements of the shoegazing style, drones and tremolo. The landmark Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space saw the influence of African-American gospel and blues beginning to show, while walls of sound modeled after the production styles of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson also made their presence felt. Such influences dominated Spiritualized's next album, Let It Come Down which included over 120 musicians. Amazing Grace favoured a more stripped down sound with the gospel, blues, and soul influences even more dominant than before.

After several years of work and a serious illness on Pierce's part in July 2005, the forthcoming Spiritualized album was completed in September 2007 and is scheduled for release this year.

<title>Nitin Sawhney - 3 Nov 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1190/Nitin-Sawhney</link>
<description>One of the most talented and recognized producers and songwriters within the British electronic and fusion music scene, Nitin Sawhney is also a respected actor, writer, and scriptwriter. Conceiving daring theme combinations of electronica-style beats with gleaming pieces of Asian inspirations driven within the trip-hop and jazzy styles, Sawhney delivers exclusive and overwhelming sound pieces, enlightened by his indubitable creative insight.
Sawhney first joined James Taylor, with whom he played a series of dates across the U.K. alongside Taylor's quartet. Following the experiment, Sawhney decided on forming his own band, the Jazztones, by that time playing on concerts headlined by DJs like Gilles Peterson. After yet another collaboration, by then with Talvin Singh with whom he assembled the Tihai Trio, the British creator decided to make it on his own, releasing his debut album, Spirit Dance, on his own label in 1993. A few months after, he signed a contract with Outcaste Records, for which he released one of his most acclaimed recordings, Migration, in 1995. Following a year of incessant work, the album Displacing the Priest arrived record stores, again subliming his exceptional creative skills. During this period, Sawhney also continued to dedicate part of his time to writing soundtracks for acclaimed TV series and theater plays, or accomplishing remixing works for artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. At the same time, during the following months, Sawhney recorded his long-awaited fourth album, Beyond Skin, offered in late 1999. Coming after an extensive touring season across the U.K. and Europe alongside artists like Sting, Sawhney recorded what turned out to be his fifth studio record; Prophesy arrived in 2001, again achieving exalted reviews from the media. Sawhney remained busy for the rest of the 2000s, releasing works such as Human and Philtre as well as mix albums like In the Mind of Nitin Sawhney and Fabriclive.15.

<title>The Rifles - 30 Nov 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1135/The-Rifles</link>
<description>Joel Stoker (vocals), Lucas Crowther (guitar), Rob Pyne (bass), and Grant Marsh (drums) create the jaunty garage rock sound of the Rifles. With their Jam-like swagger and matched playfulness to the Kooks, the Rifles came together in London in 2003. They made their performance debut a year later and praise from NME and BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe quickly championed the Rifles' boyish rock &amp; roll fun. Their debut 'When I'm Alone' arrived in May 2005 and did moderately well among their growing fan base, however 'Local Boy' gave the Rifles their first U.K. Top 40 hit that fall. Other chart hits such as the Strokes-like 'Repeat Offender' and 'She's Got Standards' added to the band's heightened popularity in 2006. Produced by Ian Broudie (the Coral, the Subways, I Am Kloot), No Love Lost marked the Rifles' debut full-length in July. Additional U.K. club shows and appearances at the annual V Festival in Chelmsford and Staffordshire followed in August.

<title>The Wedding Present - 16 Dec 08</title>
<link>http://www.leedstickets.com/eventinfo/1161/The-Wedding-Present</link>
<description>“The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock n Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!” John Peel.

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry's game. That was back in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother's suitcases. In this fashion, the debut single Go Out And Get 'Em Boy! was collected from the pressing plant, delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band's philosophy ever since. From George Best, the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.
